If you know anything about sound systems or high end headphones you are bound to have heard the name Bose. When it comes to sound technology Bose is considered one of the best systems to have. This article is about the man behind Bose.

Raised in Philadelphia by an Indian father adn American mother Amar Bose showed an early proclivity for electronics. At age thirteen Amar began his own business. He repaired radios and made electronic toys and supplemented his families income.

Mr. Bose received his Ph.D in electrical engineering from MIT. He purchased a speaker system to listen to classical music which was a passion of his. The sound quality was so poor it launched his interest in sound technology. He developed a sound system that would imitate the quality of sound heard in a symphony hall. He also developed headphones using unique, patented technology. Bose was involved in acoustics, aviation, defense, and nuclear physics as an inventor and researcher.

In 1964 Mr. Bose created his company often working nights as he taught advanced courses in the day time at MIT where he was a popular and innovative teacher.  He kept his company private in a time when most companies wanted to go public for the money it would make them. He is quoted as saying he didn’t go into business to make money but rather to do interesting work. Because of this policy, he was able to allocate time and resources to research for long periods of time which other company’s shareholders would have nixed as unproductive.

An example is his creation of an electromagnetic suspension system for cars that totally did away with the traditional spring and shock absorber system and provided a far superior comfortable ride. This creation took twenty four years to develop. This is the kind of devotion to innovation and exploration that makes Bose sound systems and headphones top of the line.

Ken Jacobs, Bose’ one time student and present employee was hired to work on the Bose’ “Live Sound” project. In 1994 they developed a soft ware program that is used by acoustic engineers to be able to “hear” what audio will sound like from any seat in a stadium or theater before the building is even built. Ken Jacobs is quoted as saying in an interview, “He let me work on that with a team of five engineers for 10 years—most of the time thinking that it was impossible.”

Bose has multiple patented technologies in speakers for the car, home and computer. His noise cancelling headphones provide the listener with a clear, crisp audio experience. Alternatively, If it’s just a little peace and quiet you want in this noisy world they can help with that as well. Amar Bose is an example of the entrepreneurial spirit.
